Pro cyclist sets wickedly fast pace- Lauren Tamayo breaks world record: Asheville can now call itself home to a new world-record-breaking bicyclist. At the Pan American Road and Track Championships, held in Aguascalientes, Mexico, on May 12, local racer Lauren Tamayo and her two U.S. teammates defeated Cuba in the team pursuit finals. Asheville's Tamayo breaks Town Mtn Hill Climb record: Lauren Tamayo, 26, of Asheville, a U.S. cycling team member who rides for team Peanut Butter & Co. Twenty 12, broke the women's record in the 28th annual Town Mountain Hill Climb Time Trial.

Tamayo set the record of 21 minutes, 10.68 seconds in 2008, then broke it during the 5-mile uphill time trial in 20:43:71 last Friday night. MORE...

Asheville's Lauren Tamayo crashed in Tour de Flanders: Lauren Tamayo, a professional cyclist with team Twenty 12 who lives in Asheville, crashed today while competing in the prestigious Tour de Flanders cycling race in Belgium. Tamayo crashed 50K into the 119K race. She was involved in a crash with several other riders, but according to her husband, Mike Tamayo, she did not sustain any serious injuries, although she did take a hit to her ribs. MORE...
The Day Before Flanders: The second round of the women’s 10-round World Cup, the 119km race begins at 11 a.m. and is expected to finish by 2 p.m., almost two hours before the men are expected to roll into Ninove. Coryn Rivera, Shelley Evans and Lauren Tamayo (Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12) finished second, third and fourth. Evans and Tamayo finished locked atop the omnium standings with 76 points each.
